Designing HVAC Solutions That Address Today’s Industry Challenges

As labor pressures continue to challenge the HVAC industry, contractors are being asked to do more with less. At the same time, homeowners and property managers are feeling the impact of rising replacement costs.

For contractors and distributors, that creates a tough balancing act: doing more jobs with fewer people under tighter constraints.

GE Appliances Air & Water Solutions is approaching these challenges with a clear focus: designing flexible solutions that reflect how work actually gets done in the field. Our latest offerings are designed to adapt to the job — helping contractors deliver the right fit without added complexity or cost.

Industry Trends Shaping the HVAC Landscape

Nearly 60% of HVAC work today is tied to retrofit and replacement projects, where existing building constraints often dictate what’s possible. At the same time, the industry continues to face a significant labor gap, making install efficiency and serviceability critical to maintaining profitability.

Rather than treating these as separate challenges, GE Appliances is addressing them together: simplifying installs, expanding retrofit flexibility and building systems that reduce time on site.

Consider a common scenario: a contractor is replacing an aging system in a multifamily or light commercial building. Space is limited, existing ductwork needs to be preserved and tenants or occupants expect minimal downtime.

Traditionally, this might require a full system redesign, extensive wiring and longer installation timelines, all of which increase cost and complexity.

Today, contractors are looking for solutions that fit into existing footprints, integrate with current infrastructure and can be installed quickly without compromising performance.

Designing Products That Work the Way You Do

Based on conversations with contractors, GE Appliances is building its HVAC portfolio around real jobsite challenges and practical design.

Commercial HVAC

On many retrofit jobs, the biggest constraint isn’t the equipment, it’s everything around it. Tight rooftops, limited access points and existing infrastructure often dictate what’s possible before a job even begins.

For contractors replacing aging systems on a crowded commercial roof, the MRV-7 VRF system offers a practical advantage with its single-module chassis up to 20 tons. Instead of coordinating multiple units and connections, crews can work with a more consolidated footprint, helping reduce installation time and rooftop congestion.

In smaller buildings or mixed-use properties, where space is tighter and access is more limited, the MRV-7S provides a 2–5 ton solution that fits more easily into existing layouts. This is especially useful in retrofit scenarios where equipment needs to be maneuvered through narrow service areas or installed without major structural changes.

Wiring is another common pain point, particularly on larger or more complex jobs. Running traditional daisy chain communication lines can add hours to an install and introduce opportunities for error. With the MRV-Link wireless communication network, contractors can reduce that wiring burden, speeding up commissioning and simplifying future service work.

And when a full system replacement isn’t feasible, such as in buildings where ductwork must remain in place, the AHU Connection Kit allows new outdoor units to integrate with existing air handling systems. Instead of a full tear-out, contractors can upgrade performance while minimizing disruption to the building and its occupants.

Residential HVAC

Space constraints show up just as often in residential work, especially in townhomes or dense developments where every inch matters.

In these situations, systems like those from GE Appliances are designed to open up installation possibilities. The side-discharge inverter heat pump, with a depth as low as 17-1/8 inches and minimal clearance requirements, can be installed in areas that would typically be ruled out, such as narrow side yards or zero-lot-line properties.

For contractors, that can mean the difference between reworking a plan and completing a job with minimal changes. Combined with cold-climate performance down to –22°F, it also provides confidence that compact installations won’t come at the expense of performance.

Multifamily HVAC

In multifamily and hospitality settings, the challenge often shifts from exterior space to interior layout. Mechanical room space is limited, and maintaining a quiet, comfortable environment for residents or guests is critical.

Expanded Zoneline® vertical terminal air conditioner (VTAC) offerings, including new 2-ton models, help address these constraints. Instead of relying on more complex rooftop systems or multiple units, contractors can install a self-contained system inside a closet, in some cases stacked with a lowboy water heater.

This approach frees up exterior walls, reduces system complexity and creates a quieter, more residential-style experience, all while simplifying installation and maintenance.

What This Means for Pros

HVAC work is increasingly retrofit-centric, labor markets remain tight and customers expect systems that perform and integrate smoothly. By focusing on simplified installs, retrofit flexibility, robust cold-climate performance and long-term product support, pros can deliver quality results efficiently and with confidence.
