One of the most common complaints from hotel guests is about the room’s air-conditioning unit. Whether it is too loud or its temperature is inconsistent, the HVAC unit can make or break a guest’s stay. That’s why it’s so important to select packaged terminal air conditioner units with the optimal Btu/h for air-conditioned spaces.
What is Btu/h?
A British thermal unit is the unit of heat needed to increase one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. It measures the capacity of an air conditioner, with higher numbers indicating larger capacity.
British thermal unit per hour is used in the HVAC industry as a measurement of how much heat in Btu is removed from a room in one hour and signifies the cooling power of air conditioners. Higher ratings equal more powerful air conditioners that can cool larger rooms. Ratings are shown in tons (1 ton = 12,000 Btu/h).
If you have too much power — too many Btu — the rooms will cool too fast, causing the PTAC to cycle too often. That can lead to increased maintenance issues. Cooling too fast can also cause the PTAC not to adjust the humidity level, leaving the room feeling clammy.
GE Zoneline® PTAC units are available in a variety of power levels ranging from 5,000 Btu/h to 18,000 Btu/h.
